Anthropic merges Claude chat and Cowork into one interface, and adds Docs and Slides

Anthropic said on 16 September that it is merging Claude's regular chat and its Cowork agent workspace into a single interface, called just Claude, and shipping two new document features in the same release: Claude Docs and Claude Slides. The rollout starts today for Pro and Max subscribers, with Team and Free to follow, and Enterprise admins get at least 30 days of advance notice before the change reaches their accounts.

What actually changed

The user no longer picks between chat and Cowork before starting. Anthropic says Claude decides on its own whether a request is a quick question or a longer task that runs in the background, and hands the work to the right engine. The same thread can now schedule a recurring run, report back on progress, and let the user set how often Claude should check in before acting. Design, previously a separate product, is embedded in the same conversation alongside its standalone version.

Docs and Slides

Claude Docs writes a collaborative document from inside a chat. Claude Slides drafts a deck and exports to PowerPoint or PDF. Anthropic gives one concrete example in the post: asking Claude to write a report and a matching set of slides in the same turn, so both come out of one prompt.

Anthropic does not name a limit on how many documents or decks a plan can produce, and no per-file size figure appears in the blog post. The company also does not report how much of Claude's paid usage was already going through Cowork rather than chat, so there is no way to measure how many users this collapse affects.

What a team should watch

The single-surface pattern is what OpenAI, Google and Microsoft have been shipping over the same period, and it presses in the same direction: fewer product choices for the user, more decisions made by the model at the moment of the request. A team that scripted around Cowork's separate interface, whether through the Claude API or a browser workflow, needs to check whether the automation still lands in the right pane after the merge, since the underlying router now decides for it.

The Docs and Slides move is aimed at Google Workspace and Microsoft 365, the two places most teams' documents already live. It matters less as a Google Docs replacement than as an escape hatch: a report that a team's Claude subscription already paid the tokens for now lands as an editable file, without a second round of copy and paste through Gemini or Copilot to reformat it.
