Cloudflare opened a beta that lets a site charge AI agents per request over HTTP 402, with four customers live today

Why it mattersA site that wants to be read by an AI agent but paid for the reading has, for the first time, a way to price a request without a signup or a checkout page, which changes what a small publisher or API can put behind a paywall.

A site that wants agents to buy access one request at a time has never had a payment step small enough for the job. Cloudflare said on 30 September its Monetization Gateway is open in closed beta for US sellers, and named four customers already using it to charge agents by the request for search, market signals, forecasts and inference.

The gateway sits behind Cloudflare's network and reads the HTTP 402 Payment Required status code. A buyer can offer payment for a resource inline with the same request, sign an authorization, and receive the resource after settlement. There is no redirect to a checkout page and no separate payment API to call. Sellers write pricing rules against parts of the request (URL, headers, query parameters) and pick a pricing scheme.

What settles the payment

Cloudflare handles verification and settlement through Coinbase's x402 Facilitator, and payments settle on the Base blockchain using USDC, a stablecoin pegged to the US dollar. Cloudflare says it also handles failures and retries, analytics, and keeping up with x402 protocol changes. Additional payment rails, discovery for sellers and identity primitives are named as later work.

Two limits the post states plainly. The beta is US-based sellers only at open. And the gateway is built for cases where every request is the use: APIs, tools and datasets. High-value content that is crawled once and used a thousand times uses a separate product Cloudflare calls Pay Per Use, so a publisher deciding how to charge picks between the two on that shape.

The customers already live

Cloudflare cites four in-production uses.

Cloudflare AI Gateway itself now accepts request-time payment for a select set of models by adding the header Payment-Method: x402, alongside its existing credits balance. Cloudflare says its AI Gateway sits between developers and hundreds of models and has co-designed the Monetization Gateway to support origin-controlled pricing, so the gateway asks AI Gateway for the price per token at request time.

Ceramic.ai, a web search API for agents, uses it to sell searches without an API key. The company says its index covers more than 40 billion pages and returns results in as little as 50 milliseconds.

Stocktwits, an 18-year-old market conversation site, uses it to charge for stock signals a request at a time. Founder Howard Lindzon frames it as a way to make the site's data available to agents without a subscription or an enterprise licence.

The fourth named customer is API2PDF, a REST API for generating PDFs. API2PDF says its prior signup flow, which required a credit card after a first free month, dropped more than half of prospective customers. Under the new setup, a request without an API key gets an HTTP 402 back and the agent pays and the request completes.

What is not measured

The performance and reach claims cited above (Ceramic's 50 milliseconds, Cloudflare AI Gateway's coverage, Stocktwits' reach) are figures each company states about its own product. Whether enough agents present valid x402 signatures on the buying side is something a launch post cannot prove. What is settled is the plumbing: a site can quote a price, take payment and serve a request in one round trip.

For a team that runs an API a coding agent might call, the design question changes. Instead of issuing an API key and hoping for reasonable use, the option now exists to price a call and let an agent decide whether the answer is worth what it costs. Cloudflare's own AI Gateway being one of the buyers is the strongest signal on that side of the market today.
