Kubai Icons is a Claude skill that draws new icons to match 66 existing ones

Kubai Design released Kubai Icons, a Claude skill that draws new icons in the style of 66 worked examples. It checks its own output by rendering screenshots and fixing any icon that misses the rules.

Why it mattersA product team can add an icon that matches the rest of its set in one chat turn. The checklist and 66 worked examples do the design work.

Kubai Design released Kubai Icons on GitHub. The repo passed 107 stars in the first day. It is a Claude skill for drawing new icons in one house style. Each new icon joins 66 already in the gallery as if the same person drew it.

The skill carries four things that the model relies on. A rule file called PROMPT.md lists hard requirements for canvas, layers, corners, light, colour, marks and motion. A JavaScript engine does the colour, outlines, gradients and motion so new icons reuse them. A file of 66 worked examples gives the model a starting point. A headless self-check script renders screenshots and fixes any icon that misses the rules.

How a new icon gets drawn

Claude reads the rule file. It writes one short line per feature, naming an everyday object and what it does on hover. A folder opens. A lock springs open. A calendar turns a page.

It draws each new icon after the closest existing one. It reuses the engine for colour and motion. Then it runs the self-check. Screenshots are rendered at 24px and 28px across seven palettes. The model compares the new icons to the old ones. It fixes any that misses a size, an outline, a layer or a colour. The loop runs until every item on the checklist passes.

Six fresh examples

The README shows six icons drawn by a new Claude session. The session had nothing but the rule file and the skill file. An alarm clock rings. A notebook opens. A scan line sweeps a QR code. A door opens to an exit arrow. A calculator key presses. A compass needle settles north. Kubai says each blind round closes a gap in the rules. The next set then comes out closer to the rest.

What the skill exports

Users can ask for dynamic icons or static ones. Dynamic icons are SVG files plus a JavaScript script that changes shape on hover, through the engine. Static icons are self-contained SVG files that drop into Figma, a native app or an <img> tag. Static icons carry the rest pose or the end of the hover.

Seven palettes come with the set. One colour per icon, five tones built from a single base (blue-grey, celadon, mint, lavender, apricot), and black. A palette change animates the colours as well.

Install and the model

Kubai says the skill is developed and tested with Claude Opus 5.5. Users paste a one-line request into Claude Code to clone the repo into ~/.claude/skills/kubai-icons. A release ZIP and a plain git clone work too. Claude Code picks the skill up on the next start.

License

The project is source-available, not open source. Icons users make with the skill belong to them, for any use including sale, with no credit required. Teams may copy the engine, the gallery and the self-check into their own project. The 66 example icons may go into products, but not into a new icon pack. Kubai bans republishing the rules under a different name and selling the skill.

A product team can hand a new icon job to a chat model. The result lines up with the rest of the set. The rule file and the self-check are what turn one draw into a match.
