Reveneau vs Toptal
Toptal is a talent network that matches companies with vetted independent professionals, with engagements it describes as running from hourly to full-time and a trial period you only pay for if satisfied. Reveneau delivers a scoped build. These are different products rather than competing versions of the same one, and the choice comes down to whether you want to direct engineers yourself or hand over a result.
Facts about Toptal last checked 2026-08-21 · their site

- Their trial-basis arrangement genuinely reduces the risk of the first hire, and we have no equivalent.
- With Toptal you keep the management job. With us you hand it over.

- Neither of us publishes a price you can compare directly, so ask both.
Where Toptal is the right answer
Written first, and deliberately. If we could not fill this section honestly, the page would not be worth publishing.
What Toptal is good at
- A vetting process they describe as rigorous, with a stated 98 percent trial-to-hire success rate
- A trial arrangement where you pay only if satisfied, which meaningfully lowers the risk of a first engagement
- Flexible engagement types, described as running from hourly to full-time
- Access to individuals across development, design, product, and finance, not only engineering
- An established network and operating history that a new firm cannot match
Choose them over us when
- You need one strong individual for a well-defined piece of work
- You have engineering management already and want to keep directing the work
- You want to scale a team up and down without renegotiating a scope
- You need a specialism outside software engineering, such as design or finance
- The pay-only-if-satisfied trial matters to you, since we do not offer one

| Stage | Reveneau | Toptal |
|---|---|---|
| Getting started | We write a specification with you | They match you with candidates |
| First commitment | A scoped engagement | A trial you pay for only if satisfied |
| Direction | We direct the work | You direct the individual |
| Quality | Automated checks that block a merge | Set by you and the individual |
| Scaling | Re-scope the build | Add or remove people |
The framing that makes this comparison useful is that Toptal and Reveneau sell different products. One is access to people, the other is a delivered result. Almost everything else follows.
What Toptal does that we cannot
Two things stand out, and both are genuine.
The first is the trial arrangement. Their site describes working with a new team member on a trial basis and paying only if satisfied. That is a real answer to the hardest problem in buying engineering, which is that you cannot tell how good someone is until they have worked for you. We do not offer an equivalent, and if that risk reduction is what you need, it is a good reason to choose them.
The second is breadth. Their network covers design, product, and finance as well as engineering. If your gap is a designer for six weeks, we are not a candidate.
Where the models genuinely differ
With a talent network you keep the management job: deciding architecture, integrating one person's work with another's, keeping a standard for what done means, and resolving contradictory requirements. If you have someone doing that, this is efficient and you are not paying for a layer you do not need.
With a firm you hand that over, and pay for it. That is worth it when nobody on your side has the capacity, and wasteful when someone does.
There is also a difference in what happens after release. A build engagement can keep responsibility for the result in production. An individual engagement typically ends when the individual's contract does, and continuity depends on your arrangement with them.
On price
Neither of us publishes a number you could put side by side. Their site does not display pricing, and our engagements are scoped per build. Any figure you read comparing the two on a third-party blog was not sourced from either of us, and we are not going to repeat one here.
Ask both. That is the only way to get a number that is actually about your project.
What we would say plainly
If your need is one excellent person for a defined piece of work and you have someone to direct them, Toptal is the better fit and the trial makes it lower risk than engaging us. If your need is a build that has to be delivered and proven, with somebody accountable for the whole of it, that is what we do.
Where we fit
Reveneau suits this when
- You want a result delivered rather than people to manage
- The build needs several streams of work coordinated by one specification
- Correctness matters enough that automated verification is the point
- You want one party accountable for the whole thing after release
