The list

Small AI firms or large consultancies: how to choose

The fourteen firms in this guide fall into two groups. Nine list AI work among their main services: Reveneau, Fluxon, Ode with Anthropic, Distyl AI, Tribe AI, Loka, Provectus, Factored and ClearScale. Five are larger firms or firms with a wider business: Thoughtworks, Slalom, Grid Dynamics, Turing and IDEO. This page sets out what each group offers, who owns each firm, and which questions have a different answer depending on the size of the firm you hire.

Key takeaways

  • Thoughtworks reports more than 10,000 people in 47 offices, Slalom reports 54 local offices, and Grid Dynamics reported 4,961 employees at the end of 2025.
  • TechCrunch reported in March 2025 that investors valued Turing at $2.2 billion, and wrote that its main new business appeared to be supplying code to AI labs.
  • Ownership differs across the list: Anthropic co-owns Ode, funds advised by Apax Partners own Thoughtworks, and a Chinese company holds a minority stake in Grid Dynamics.
  • Pick by the questions that matter to you: who works on your project, whether the firm sells its own platform, and who owns the firm.

Size changes some answers and leaves others the same. This page shows which.

What the size figures say

Most of these firms do not publish a headcount. Where a figure exists, the table says who gives it.

Firm Size figure Who gives it
Reveneau Not stated No figure in this guide
Fluxon 200 employees Forbes, as of March 2026 [13]
Ode with Anthropic 100 engineers TechCrunch, July 2026 [6]
Distyl AI Not published No figure found
Tribe AI Network of more than 500 contractors TechCrunch, July 2024 [8]
Loka Not published No figure found
Provectus 400+ AI builders and consultants Provectus's homepage [11]
Factored 500+ engineers Factored's homepage [12]
ClearScale Not published No figure found
Thoughtworks 10,000+ people, 47 offices in 18 countries Thoughtworks's about page [1]
Slalom 54 local offices Slalom's who we are page [2]
Grid Dynamics 4,961 employees at 31 December 2025 Company results filing [3]
Turing Staff in the hundreds One of its investors, quoted by TechCrunch, March 2025 [4]
IDEO Not published Fortune reported revenue below $100 million [5]

Two of these figures need an explanation. Tribe AI's number counts contractors in a network, and TechCrunch reported it in 2024. Turing's number is an investor's statement, and the same TechCrunch article reported that Turing works with large numbers of outside engineers on code for AI projects. A headcount and the number of people who may work on your project can be different numbers.

What a large firm offers

Many offices and many services. Thoughtworks describes AI work that runs from building new products to rebuilding old systems, data engineering and design, and it sells its own agent platforms, named AI/works and Agent/works [1]. Slalom describes one AI service that picks the uses, builds and deploys the systems, and runs them afterwards [2]. A large firm can staff a programme across several countries and several business units at the same time.

Public reporting. Grid Dynamics is listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange. Its 2025 results release, filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, reports revenue of $411.8 million and 4,961 employees [3]. A buyer whose purchasing team wants figures filed with a regulator can read them there.

A wider business. Turing, by its own account, helps AI labs improve their models and helps companies deploy AI agents. TechCrunch wrote in March 2025 that its main focus for new business appeared to be supplying code to AI labs for training future models [4]. IDEO is a design agency, as Fortune describes it, and its AI Lab sells strategy and design for AI products [5].

What a smaller AI-focused firm offers

AI work is a main service. Each of these firms describes a narrower offer than the large firms.

  • By its own account, Reveneau writes 100 percent of its code with AI, and every change has to pass a large eval suite written from the client's specification before release. Reveneau grades that suite with a model called Jev and says Jev makes the suite run ten times faster than its previous grader did. It uses AI in place of hiring more engineers and puts the saving into clients' prices. It takes responsibility for the whole project through production and after release. Its offer is on the AI development service page.
  • Fluxon's homepage lists technology and AI strategy, full product builds, AI products and agents, and platforms and core systems.
  • Ode with Anthropic says it helps companies turn the newest AI models into measurable business results, working with the client from the plan through deployment.
  • Distyl AI says it sends engineers and researchers into large companies and deploys its own products, customized for each business.
  • Tribe AI says it places engineers inside large organizations to build and run AI.
  • Loka lists generative AI, data, AWS cloud work, design and app development, and healthcare and life sciences.
  • Provectus says it works in two industries on purpose, financial services and healthcare [11].
  • Factored says its engineers work inside the client's environment and stay through production [12].
  • ClearScale says it builds on AWS, including AI applications on Amazon Bedrock and Claude.

Who owns each firm

Ownership matters for three reasons. It can tie a firm to one AI model maker. It can raise a compliance question. And a change of owner can change the firm.

Firm Owner or main investors Who says so
Reveneau Not stated Not covered in this guide
Fluxon Fluxon Apps LLC; no funding round found for this guide Fluxon's site footer
Ode with Anthropic Joint venture of Anthropic, Blackstone, Hellman & Friedman, Goldman Sachs and others TechCrunch [6]
Distyl AI Venture investors; a 2025 funding round led by Khosla Ventures and Lightspeed Venture Partners Crunchbase News [7]
Tribe AI First outside funding round, led by Bryce Roberts of Indie, after six years without outside funding TechCrunch [8]
Provectus Privately owned, led by its founders Provectus's homepage [11]
Factored Private; listed in AI Fund's portfolio AI Fund, an investor
Thoughtworks Funds advised by Apax Partners, since November 2024 Thoughtworks press release [9]
Grid Dynamics Public company; Beijing Teamsun Technology holds a minority stake Grid Dynamics's homepage [10]
Turing Venture investors; a 2025 funding round led by Khazanah Nasional Berhad TechCrunch [4]

Loka, ClearScale, Slalom and IDEO publish no ownership details on the pages read for this guide.

Two rows need attention. Anthropic, which makes the Claude models, co-owns Ode. Ode works closely with Anthropic's applied AI team, according to TechCrunch [6]. Grid Dynamics states that Beijing Teamsun Technology, a Chinese company, owns 20.0 percent of its shares through a subsidiary, a figure it gives as approximate [10].

Questions where size changes the answer

Who will work on my project? At a firm of any size, the people in the sales meeting may not be the people who build. A firm with thousands of staff has more people it could assign. Ask for names and roles in the contract, and ask whether they can change.

Does the firm sell its own platform? Thoughtworks sells AI/works and Agent/works. Distyl deploys its own products. Turing offers an agent management platform. A platform can save time, and it also ties your system to the vendor. Ask what you own if you leave.

How many other clients share the team? A large firm can move people between clients. A small firm may have fewer people to move. Both can be a problem. Ask how the firm handles a team member who leaves.

Is the firm stable? Fortune reported in May 2026, citing earlier reports, that IDEO had cut a third of its staff and closed two offices before its current chief executive took over [5]. TechCrunch reported in 2024 that Tribe AI had raised its first outside money after six years [8]. Facts like these are a reason to ask about a firm's plans and staffing before you sign.

The US Office of Management and Budget tells federal agencies to state in their requests that they want AI proposals that reduce the risk of vendor lock-in, which means being unable to leave a vendor without losing your work. It names knowledge transfer, clear rules for moving data and models, clear licence terms and clear pricing [14]. Those four points apply to a firm of any size.

When a large consultancy fits

  • You need a programme across many countries or business units at once.
  • Your purchasing team wants a vendor whose figures are filed with a regulator.
  • You want one firm for strategy, the build and running the system for years.
  • Your project includes work beyond AI, such as a large system rebuild or a Salesforce rollout.

When a smaller AI-focused firm fits

  • You have one product or one workflow to build, and you want AI work to be one of the firm's main services.
  • You want to compare firms on one small task before a large contract.
  • You want the firm to explain how it checks AI output before release, in specific terms.

If that last point matters most, ask every firm the same question: what has to pass before a change reaches you? Reveneau's answer is an eval suite written from your specification. You can contact Reveneau to see how that would apply to your project, and read the full list for every other firm's entry.

Two comparison pages on this site go further on these choices: a product studio and an engineering consultancy.

Common questions

Which firms in this guide are large consultancies?

Thoughtworks, Slalom and Grid Dynamics are the large consultancies. Thoughtworks reports more than 10,000 people in 47 offices across 18 countries, Slalom reports 54 local offices, and Grid Dynamics reported 4,961 employees at 31 December 2025 in a filing. TechCrunch reported in March 2025 that investors valued Turing at $2.2 billion, and IDEO is a design agency with a wider business than AI software.

Which firms in this guide focus on AI work?

Nine firms list AI work among their main services: Reveneau, Fluxon, Ode with Anthropic, Distyl AI, Tribe AI, Loka, Provectus, Factored and ClearScale. Their published sizes range from 100 engineers at Ode, reported by TechCrunch in July 2026, to more than 500 engineers at Factored by its own account. Several publish no headcount at all.

Who owns Ode with Anthropic?

TechCrunch reported in July 2026 that Ode with Anthropic is a joint venture of Anthropic, Blackstone, Hellman & Friedman, Goldman Sachs and others, launched in May as a $1.5 billion AI implementation company. The joint venture bought Fractional AI, which became the base of Ode. Anthropic makes the Claude models, so Ode has an ownership tie to a model maker.

Who owns Grid Dynamics?

Grid Dynamics is a public company listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange. On its own website it states that Beijing Teamsun Technology, a Chinese company, is a minority shareholder that owns 20.0 percent of its shares through a subsidiary, a figure the company gives as approximate. Buyers with rules on foreign ownership of vendors should check that statement against their policy.

Who owns Thoughtworks?

A Thoughtworks press release from November 2024 says the company became private and is owned by funds advised by Apax Partners. Before that deal it was a public company. Thoughtworks's about page says it has more than 10,000 people in 47 offices across 18 countries. No independent article on the deal was opened for this guide.

Is Turing an AI development company or a data company?

Turing does both, by its own account: it helps AI labs improve their models and helps companies deploy AI agents with engineers and a management platform. TechCrunch wrote in March 2025 that Turing's main focus for new business appeared to be supplying code to AI labs for training models. Buyers who want a builder of client software should ask how much of Turing's work that is.

Will I meet the engineers who build my project at a large firm?

Ask, because the answer depends on the firm and the project. At a firm with thousands of staff, the people in the sales meeting may be different from the people who build. Ask for names and roles in writing, ask whether they can change during the project, and put the answer in the contract.

Why does it matter if a firm sells its own platform?

A platform can save time, and it also ties your system to that vendor. Thoughtworks sells AI/works and Agent/works, Distyl deploys its own products, and Turing offers an agent management platform, by their own accounts. Before you sign, ask what code and data you own, and what happens to the system if you stop paying for the platform.

Is a small AI firm riskier than a large consultancy?

Each size carries its own risks. A small firm may have fewer people to cover a team member who leaves. A large firm may move people between clients. Fortune cited reports of staff cuts at IDEO, and TechCrunch reported Tribe AI's first outside funding in 2024. Ask any firm about staffing cover and its plans before you sign.

When should I hire a large consultancy for AI work?

Hire a large consultancy when you need a programme across many countries or business units at once, when your purchasing team wants figures filed with a regulator, when you want one firm for strategy, build and years of operation, or when the project includes work beyond AI, such as a large system rebuild. Thoughtworks, Slalom and Grid Dynamics each describe work of that type.
