Cost and method

What forward deployed engineering costs in Europe

No firm in this guide publishes a rate card, a day rate or a price list for forward deployed engineers. A few describe how they charge: Netguru bills by the hour, Polynom ties its operated service to realised value, and SFEIR shows one figure on its homepage without explaining it. The closest public numbers are official pay figures. The UK's Office for National Statistics gives a median of £56,914 a year for full-time software developers in 2025, and Statistics Sweden a median of SEK 53,500 a month. This page explains those figures, why a firm's rate is higher, and what a quote should list.

Published October 21, 2026. Editorial.

Key takeaways

  • No firm on the list published a rate card or a day rate on 21 October 2026, so ask each firm for a written quote.
  • The ONS gives a median gross pay of £56,914 a year in 2025 for full-time UK programmers and software development professionals, and a mean of £63,810.
  • Statistics Sweden gives an average of SEK 55,500 a month and a median of SEK 53,500 for software and system developers in 2025.
  • A firm's rate covers the engineer's pay plus its other costs and its profit, so compare whole quotes for the same work, with travel and any software licences listed.

No firm in this guide publishes a rate card or a day rate for forward deployed engineers. This page shows what the firms do say about how they charge, the official pay figures that are public, and how to read a quote. Every page used here was read on 21 October 2026. Currencies are given as each source gives them, and none is converted, because the sources used for this guide give no exchange rate.

Reveneau

Reveneau offers forward deployed engineers from offices at 435 Utah Street, San Francisco, and Floor 33, 909 Mainland Street, Vancouver, and it lists no office in Europe. Reveneau says it uses AI in place of hiring more engineers and puts that saving into the prices its clients pay. It publishes no figure for that saving. By its own account, AI writes 100 percent of its code, and every change has to pass a large eval suite, a set of automated tests written from the specification, before release. Reveneau says Jev grades that suite and makes it run ten times faster than its previous grader did. It says it takes responsibility for the whole project through production and after release. To get a price, describe the work through the contact page.

Fluxon

Fluxon's pages read for this guide give no price. Its careers page lists roles in Poland and Portugal [6], and its AI development page says its work is "Forward-deployed by default."

Netguru

Netguru's forward deployed engineer page says its engagements are "structured on a Time and Materials basis" [1]. Time and materials means you pay for the hours the engineers work. The page says most full-time engagements start at a monthly retainer, which is a fixed fee paid each month, and that part-time advice of two to three days a week and projects with a set scope are also offered. It says Netguru will share rate information on a first call about the scope of the work, once it understands your systems and timeline.

SFEIR

SFEIR's French homepage shows a card headed "Projet Preuve", French for proof project. The card shows two less-than signs followed by "40k€", and below it the line "Votre premier livrable IA en production en 8 semaines", meaning your first AI deliverable in production in 8 weeks [3]. The page does not say what the figure covers, whether it is a price, or what the less-than signs mean. This guide therefore does not treat it as a price. Ask SFEIR what the figure includes.

Polynom

Polynom's homepage calls its offer "an operated service, indexed on realised value" [4]. An operated service means Polynom builds the AI agents and then runs them for you. Indexed on means tied to, so the phrase ties the service to the value it delivers. The page gives no figure and no formula. The homepage says each engagement starts with a value estimate that the client's leaders approve. Ask Polynom to show, in writing, how the value is measured and how the price follows it.

Devoteam

Devoteam's forward deployed page gives no price. It says its engineers learn where a client's business makes and loses money, then pick the problems worth solving "and size each one in euros before building" [2]. That describes how Devoteam chooses work. Ask for the price of the work itself in the same written form.

Official pay figures for software developers

Pay figures show what an engineer earns, and a firm's rate has to cover at least that pay. Two official sources were opened for this guide.

Source Who it covers Figure
Office for National Statistics, UK, ASHE 2025 provisional, Table 14.7a [7] Full-time employee jobs, code 2134, programmers and software development professionals; 343 thousand jobs Median £56,914 a year; mean £63,810 a year
Office for National Statistics, the same table [7] All employee jobs in the same code; 360 thousand jobs Median £55,587 a year; mean £62,387 a year
Statistics Sweden, table AM0110, source the National Mediation Office [8] Software and system developers, code 2512, all sectors, both sexes, 2025 Average SEK 55,500 a month; median SEK 53,500 a month

A few words explain the table. Gross pay is pay before tax. The median is the middle value: half of the jobs pay more and half pay less. The mean is the plain average, which a small number of high salaries can raise. The ONS released the 2025 figures as provisional on 23 October 2025, which means they may be revised. Statistics Sweden last updated its table on 16 June 2026.

The UK figure is a year's pay in pounds, and the Swedish figure is a month's pay in kronor. They are measured in different ways, and this guide does not convert either one, so do not compare them directly.

This guide found no official pay figure for software developers in Poland, Portugal, France, Germany or the Netherlands among its sources.

One job board range

The job board Tsenta carries a copy of Enjins' job ad for a Forward Deployed AI Engineer in Utrecht, marked mid level and hybrid, meaning the work is split between the office and home. The board shows a range of 4500 EUR to 6200 EUR a month [5]. The board displays the range, and it is not clear whether Enjins set it. It is the pay for one role at one firm. Enjins publishes no price to clients.

Why a firm's rate is higher than an engineer's pay

A firm that places an engineer with you pays that engineer's salary. It also pays for the engineer's benefits and taxes, for recruiting and training, for managers and offices, for the weeks when the engineer is between projects, and for its sales work. It then adds a profit. So the price you pay for one engineer's time is higher than that engineer's pay. None of the firms in this guide publishes how much higher.

Hiring your own engineer has costs too: recruiting, benefits, management, and the time it takes to find the right person. The US guide compares the two paths in hiring an FDE firm or your own forward deployed engineers.

What changes the price

Factor What to ask Example from this guide
How the firm charges By the hour, a monthly fee, a fixed price, or tied to results Netguru bills by the hour; Polynom ties its service to realised value
How many engineers The number, and their roles Twistag says a typical engagement uses one or two engineers, and larger programmes three to eight [9]
How many days at your site A number per week Netguru offers part-time advice of two to three days a week
Travel Who pays for flights and hotels, and in which currency Engineers in another country need flights
Software licences Whether part of the system runs on the firm's own platform, and what that costs each year 10Clouds names its AIConsole platform; Grid Dynamics delivers its own platforms through its engineers
Who runs the system later Whether the firm keeps running it for a fee Polynom describes an operated service
Which company invoices The legal entity and its country, and the currency of the invoice A firm may invoice from a company in another country

What a quote should list

  1. The names and roles of the engineers, and where each one will work.
  2. How the firm charges, and the rate or fee for each person or for the whole job.
  3. The days each week at your site, and the travel costs.
  4. Every software licence your system will need, with its yearly cost after the engineers leave.
  5. What has to pass before each release, and who writes and runs those tests.
  6. What the handover includes, and the date it happens.
  7. The company that will invoice, its country, and the currency.

How to compare quotes

Ask every firm on your shortlist for a quote for the same piece of work, described in the same words. Put the answers in one table with the columns above. Compare the total over the whole length of the work, including licences and the cost of running the system after the firm leaves. Then pay the two clearest firms for a short task on your own data before you sign a larger contract. The FDE guide's page on how to price forward deployed engineering explains the common pricing models, and what forward deployed engineering costs from a US firm covers the US figures.

The full list of European FDE firms gives every entry. The printable questions to ask a European FDE firm list has a section on price.

Common questions

What does a forward deployed engineer from a European firm cost?

No firm in this guide published a rate card or a day rate on 21 October 2026, so ask each firm for a written quote. Netguru says it bills by the hour and shares rates on a first call about the scope. Official pay data shows the pay a firm's rate must cover: the UK median for full-time software developers was £56,914 a year in 2025.

What is the median pay of a full-time software developer in the UK?

The Office for National Statistics gives a median gross pay of £56,914 a year in 2025 for full-time employee jobs in code 2134, programmers and software development professionals, covering 343 thousand jobs. The mean was £63,810. The figures are provisional, released on 23 October 2025, and may be revised in the next release.

What do software and system developers earn in Sweden?

Statistics Sweden, using data from the National Mediation Office, gives an average monthly salary of SEK 55,500 and a median of SEK 53,500 in 2025 for software and system developers, code 2512, across all sectors and both sexes. The table was last updated on 16 June 2026. The figures are monthly, while the UK figure is yearly.

Why does this guide give pounds and kronor without converting them?

The sources opened for this guide give no exchange rate, and converting with a rate from somewhere else would add a number nobody here checked. The UK figure is also a year's pay and the Swedish figure a month's pay, measured in different ways. So each figure is given in the currency and form its source uses.

How does Netguru charge for its forward deployed engineers?

Netguru's FDE page says its engagements are structured on a time and materials basis, meaning you pay for the hours worked. It says most full-time engagements start at a monthly retainer, and that part-time advice and projects with a set scope are also offered. It says it shares rate information on a first scoping call.

What is the 40k€ figure on SFEIR's homepage?

SFEIR's French homepage shows a card headed Projet Preuve, meaning proof project, with two less-than signs and 40k€, beside the line saying your first AI deliverable in production in 8 weeks. The page does not explain what the figure covers or whether it is a price, so this guide does not treat it as one. Ask SFEIR directly.

What does Polynom mean by an operated service indexed on realised value?

An operated service means Polynom builds AI agents and then runs them for the client. Indexed on means tied to, so the phrase ties the service to the value it delivers. Polynom's homepage gives no figure and no formula. It says each engagement starts with a value estimate the client's leaders approve. Ask Polynom to show in writing how value is measured.

What pay range does the Enjins FDE job ad show?

The job board Tsenta, which carries a copy of Enjins' ad for a Forward Deployed AI Engineer in Utrecht, shows 4500 EUR to 6200 EUR a month for a mid level, hybrid role. The board shows the range, and it is not clear whether Enjins set it. It is pay to the engineer, and Enjins publishes no price to clients.

Which software licences can add to the cost of an FDE project in Europe?

Any part of your system that runs on the firm's own software. 10Clouds names its own platform, AIConsole, and Grid Dynamics says its engineers deliver its own platforms. A licence keeps costing money after the engineers leave. Ask each firm to list every product your system will need, with its yearly price and who owns the licence.

Does Reveneau publish a price for its forward deployed engineers?

No. Reveneau says it uses AI in place of hiring more engineers and puts that saving into the prices its clients pay, and it publishes no figure for the saving. By its own account, AI writes all of its code and every change must pass an eval suite before release. To get a price, describe the work through its contact page.

Does this guide give official pay figures for Poland or Portugal?

No. The official pay figures in this guide are for the UK, from the Office for National Statistics, and for Sweden, from Statistics Sweden. No official pay figure for software developers in Poland, Portugal, France, Germany or the Netherlands was among the sources opened, so this guide gives none and makes no claim about pay there.
