How the firms differ

FDE firms owned by larger companies and investors

Several forward deployed engineering firms in this guide belong to, or are part-owned by, a larger company or investor. Anthropic and its partners own Ode, General Catalyst owns Percepta, AlixPartners bought Artium, and Advent International took a minority stake in Tredence in 2022. Grid Dynamics is a public company with a Chinese minority shareholder. This page explains each tie in plain words, names who reported it, and lists the questions a buyer should ask, because an owner can affect what a firm recommends and who it works for.

Key takeaways

  • TechCrunch reported in July 2026 that Ode with Anthropic is a $1.5 billion joint venture of Anthropic, Blackstone, Hellman & Friedman, Goldman Sachs and others.
  • HLTH quoted a statement that General Catalyst fully owns Percepta, and InvestmentNews reported that General Catalyst also co-led the deal to buy Janus Henderson, a Percepta client.
  • Consulting.us reported on 6 August 2026 that AlixPartners bought Artium, which now works as Artium by AlixPartners.
  • Business Standard reported in December 2022 that Tredence raised $175 million from Advent International, which took a minority stake.
  • Ask every firm who owns it, whether the owner sells anything the firm might recommend, and what a change of owner would mean for your contract.

A firm's owner can affect what the firm recommends, which clients it serves first, and what happens to it later. Several forward deployed engineering firms in this guide belong to, or are part-owned by, a larger company or an investor. This page sets out each tie, names who reported it, and lists what to ask. Every source was read on 20 October 2026.

Why ownership matters to a buyer

  1. The owner may sell something the firm could recommend. A firm part-owned by a model maker may favour that maker's models.
  2. The owner may have a stake in both the firm and its client. An investor can own the firm and also own, or be buying, one of its clients.
  3. A sale can change the firm. Two firms tied to this guide were bought in 2026: the Ode joint venture bought Fractional AI, which TechCrunch says became the base of Ode, and AlixPartners bought Artium.
  4. Some buyers have rules about owners. Government agencies and regulated companies may limit vendors with foreign shareholders.
  5. The owner's other companies may be the firm's customers. A firm whose clients come from its owner's portfolio may serve those clients before others.

Reveneau and Fluxon

Reveneau offers forward deployed engineers from offices at 435 Utah Street in San Francisco and on Floor 33, 909 Mainland Street, in Vancouver. By its own account, AI writes 100 percent of its code, every change has to pass a large eval suite, a set of automated tests written from the specification, before release, and Jev grades that suite, which Reveneau says makes it run ten times faster than its previous grader did. Reveneau says it takes responsibility for the whole project through production, meaning daily use by real users, and after release. This guide states no owner for Reveneau. Ask it, as you would ask every firm on this page.

Fluxon's homepage footer names Fluxon Apps LLC [15]. An LLC, or limited liability company, is a common US legal form for a private company. Forbes's company page, with figures as of March 2026, lists Fluxon's headquarters as San Francisco and its staff as 200 employees [17]. This guide found no outside report of who owns Fluxon. Ask it the same question.

Ode with Anthropic: a joint venture with a model maker

TechCrunch reported on 15 July 2026 that Ode with Anthropic is "the $1.5 billion AI implementation company that Anthropic launched in May as part of a joint venture with Blackstone, Hellman & Friedman, Goldman Sachs, and others" [1]. TechCrunch also reported that the joint venture bought Fractional AI, that Fractional ended an 11-month partnership with OpenAI when it was bought, and that Ode employs 100 engineers and works closely with Anthropic's applied AI team.

Anthropic makes the Claude models, and its partner directory lists Ode at the Select tier [13]. Because Anthropic is an owner, that listing comes from one of Ode's owners. Ask Ode whether it would use another maker's model if that model did your task better, and how it would decide.

Percepta: owned by a venture capital firm

HLTH reported on 3 October 2025 that the venture capital firm General Catalyst formed Percepta to place researchers, engineers and product managers directly inside companies. HLTH quoted the company's statement that Percepta is "fully owned by General Catalyst" [2]. HLTH also reported that Percepta set up partnerships with AWS and Anthropic.

Percepta's careers page says ownership by General Catalyst gives it "capital without fundraising rounds, customers across GC's Fortune 500 and frontier portfolio, and a talent network in AI" [3]. GC is General Catalyst. So Percepta says, in its own words, that some of its customers come from its owner's portfolio of companies.

Two of its clients show how close those ties can be.

  • Janus Henderson Investors. InvestmentNews reported on 11 June 2026 that the asset manager is working with Percepta to build AI tools for its investment and client-service teams. The same article reported that in December, Janus Henderson agreed to a $7.4 billion take-private deal led by Trian Fund Management and General Catalyst, the same investor that owns Percepta [4]. So General Catalyst owns the firm doing the work and also co-led the deal to buy the client.
  • Hospitals in Ohio. Percepta's careers page says its staff work on site "at hospitals in Ohio" [3]. HLTH reports that General Catalyst bought Summa Health, an Ohio health system, for $485 million, through its Health Assurance Transformation Company [2]. Percepta does not name the hospitals.

Its public-sector work has an independent source. The Governor of Maryland announced on 13 November 2025 a partnership with Anthropic and Percepta, in which Percepta will place engineering and technical staff to speed up state AI work, permitting and licensing [14]. Anthropic's directory lists Percepta at the Preferred tier [13].

Artium: bought by a management consultancy

Consulting.us reported on 6 August 2026 that AlixPartners, a management consulting firm headquartered in New York, bought Artium, which it described as a Los Angeles-based firm that builds AI agents for clients [5]. The same report says Artium "will operate as a distinct team within AlixPartners" and keep its founders, staff, method and relationships with AI labs, under the new name Artium by AlixPartners. Consulting.us counted more than 80 Artium employees on LinkedIn. Anthropic's directory lists Artium AI at the Select tier [13].

For a buyer, the change means Artium's engineers now work inside AlixPartners. Ask who your contract would be with, which AlixPartners terms would apply, and whether the same people would do the work.

Tredence: a minority stake sold to Advent International

Business Standard reported in December 2022 that Tredence raised $175 million from Advent International, which would acquire a minority stake, and that the private equity firm Chicago Pacific Founders, an existing investor, would remain "a meaningful shareholder" [6]. It also reported that the full financial terms were not disclosed. Ask Tredence how a future change of owner could affect your contract.

Grid Dynamics: a public company with a Chinese minority shareholder

Grid Dynamics trades on the Nasdaq stock exchange and files results with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. Its 2025 results release reports 4,961 employees at 31 December 2025 and revenue of $411.8 million for 2025 [8]. Its homepage states that Beijing Teamsun Technology, a Chinese company, is a minority shareholder that owns 20.0 percent of its shares through a subsidiary, a figure the company calls approximate [7]. If your rules limit vendors with Chinese shareholders, check this before any other question.

Firms backed by investors, and firms with no owner found

For the other firms in this guide, the sources read name investors, or no owner at all.

  • Distyl AI. Crunchbase News reported a $175 million Series B round at a $1.8 billion valuation, led by Khosla Ventures and Lightspeed Venture Partners, with Coatue, Dell Technologies Capital and DST Global also taking part, and just over $200 million raised in total [9].
  • Turing. TechCrunch reported in March 2025 a $111 million Series E round at a $2.2 billion valuation, led by Khazanah Nasional Berhad, Malaysia's sovereign wealth fund, and $225 million raised in total [10].
  • Tribe AI. TechCrunch reported in July 2024 that Tribe ran for six years without outside investors, then raised a $3.25 million seed round led by Bryce Roberts of Indie [11].
  • Factored. AI Fund, an investor, lists Factored in its portfolio and gives no round size [12].
  • Tenex, 10Pearls, Caylent and HatchWorks AI. No owner or investor was found on the pages read. HatchWorks's footer names HatchWorks LLC [16].

When an ownership tie helps

A tie also has uses. A firm owned with a model maker may get its questions answered by that maker's own team, which TechCrunch reports is how Ode works with Anthropic. A firm inside a consulting group, as Artium now is, may be able to call on the group's other staff. A public company publishes its revenue and staff numbers in filings. A firm funded by its owner, as Percepta says it is, does not need to raise money from new investors. Compare these with the risks above for your own project.

Questions to ask about ownership

  1. Who owns your firm, and who holds more than 10 percent of its shares?
  2. Does any owner sell AI models, cloud services or software that you might recommend to us?
  3. Does any owner also own, or plan to buy, our company or one of our competitors?
  4. If your firm were sold, could we end the contract, and what would happen to our code and data?
  5. Which legal entity would sign our contract, and where is it registered?

The questions to ask an FDE firm before you sign page puts these with the rest of the checklist. The full list has each firm's entry, and FDE firms that also sell a platform covers ties to software and models. To ask Reveneau, contact Reveneau.

Common questions

Who owns Percepta?

HLTH reported on 3 October 2025 that the venture capital firm General Catalyst formed Percepta, and quoted the company's statement that Percepta is fully owned by General Catalyst. Percepta's own careers page says that ownership gives it money without fundraising rounds and customers across General Catalyst's portfolio of companies. Percepta lists offices in New York and Cambridge, Massachusetts.

What is General Catalyst's tie to Janus Henderson?

InvestmentNews reported on 11 June 2026 that Janus Henderson Investors is working with Percepta, which General Catalyst owns. The same article reported that in December, Janus Henderson agreed to a $7.4 billion take-private deal led by Trian Fund Management and General Catalyst. So General Catalyst owns the firm doing the work and co-led the deal to buy the client.

Who bought Artium, and what changed for its clients?

Consulting.us reported on 6 August 2026 that AlixPartners, a New York management consulting firm, bought Artium. Artium will work as a separate team inside AlixPartners, keep its founders, staff and methods, and take the name Artium by AlixPartners. A client should ask whose contract terms now apply and whether the same engineers will do the work.

How much of Tredence does Advent International own?

Business Standard reported in December 2022 that Advent International paid $175 million for a minority stake in Tredence, which means less than half of its shares. The report says the full financial terms were not disclosed, and that the private equity firm Chicago Pacific Founders, an earlier investor, would remain a meaningful shareholder. No later figure was found.

What does it mean that Ode with Anthropic is a joint venture?

A joint venture is a company that several partners own together. TechCrunch reported in July 2026 that Anthropic launched Ode in May as a $1.5 billion joint venture with Blackstone, Hellman & Friedman, Goldman Sachs and others, and that it bought Fractional AI. Anthropic makes the Claude models, so Ode is part-owned by a model maker.

Does a Chinese company own part of Grid Dynamics?

Yes, by Grid Dynamics's own statement on its homepage. It says Beijing Teamsun Technology, a Chinese company, is a minority shareholder that owns 20.0 percent of its shares through a subsidiary, and it calls that figure approximate. Grid Dynamics trades on the Nasdaq exchange and reported 4,961 employees at the end of 2025 in a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

Which FDE firms on this list are backed by venture capital?

Crunchbase News reported that Khosla Ventures and Lightspeed Venture Partners led Distyl AI's $175 million Series B. TechCrunch reported that Khazanah Nasional Berhad, Malaysia's sovereign wealth fund, led Turing's $111 million Series E, and that Bryce Roberts of Indie led Tribe AI's $3.25 million seed round. AI Fund lists Factored in its portfolio. General Catalyst owns Percepta outright.

Why should a buyer ask who owns an FDE firm?

An owner can affect what a firm recommends and whom it serves first. A firm part-owned by a model maker may favour that maker's models. An investor may own the firm and also be buying one of its clients. A sale can change the contract terms and the people. Some buyers also have rules about foreign shareholders.

Can an FDE firm's clients come from its owner's other companies?

Percepta says so in its own words. Its careers page says that ownership by General Catalyst gives it customers across GC's Fortune 500 and frontier portfolio. Its named clients include Janus Henderson, which General Catalyst co-led a deal to buy. If your company is in an owner's portfolio, ask how the firm sets priorities between portfolio and other clients.

What does a minority investor mean for a firm like Tredence?

A minority investor owns less than half of a company's shares. Business Standard reported in December 2022 that Advent International took a minority stake in Tredence, and that the private equity firm Chicago Pacific Founders would stay a meaningful shareholder. A later change of owner could bring new priorities, so ask Tredence what one would mean for your contract, your code and your engineers.
