The 14 September 2026 change to Claude Code weekly limits, and how to read your own /usage

On 14 September 2026, the weekly usage limit for Claude Code changed on Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans. Depending on which day you compare it with, the change was a rise of 25 percent or a cut of 17 percent, and both figures are correct. This post tells the change from the one named source that reported it, says what Anthropic's own pages record, and then shows how to read your own account, which is the only place your allowance can be seen.

Claude Code is Anthropic's coding tool: you type a request in a terminal, the text window where you type commands, and an AI model reads files, runs commands and edits code for you. On a subscription, that work counts against a usage limit, an allowance of work the plan includes. The work is measured in tokens, the pieces of text the model reads and writes, and Anthropic states the allowance as a multiple of another plan's allowance, with no token count attached. The allowance has a session window that resets every five hours and a weekly window that resets once a week at a fixed time, by Anthropic's Pro and Max plan articles read on 4 October 2026.

What BleepingComputer reported

The source is BleepingComputer's article of 29 August 2026, by Mayank Parmar, read on 4 October 2026. Everything in this section is from that report, and the sentences it quotes from Anthropic are Anthropic's as quoted by BleepingComputer.

Anthropic announced a permanent increase of 25 percent in Claude Code's standard weekly usage limits for Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans. The report quotes Anthropic's post: "Starting September 14, we're permanently raising standard weekly limits in Claude Code by 25% for Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise plans. Until then, the current 50% increase will be in place." At the time of the report, Claude Code had a temporary 50 percent increase in weekly limits, which Anthropic said would remain in place until 14 September.

The report then gives the arithmetic, and the arithmetic is BleepingComputer's. If the original weekly allowance was 100, the temporary increase gave 150, and on 14 September that drops to 125. The report describes 125 as 25 percent more than before the promotion and puts it at 17 percent less than the temporary level. Our own check of the rounding, which is Reveneau's arithmetic: 150 minus 125 is 25, and 25 divided by 150 is 16.7 percent, which rounds to the 17 percent the report states.

The report says Anthropic later deleted the original thread and posted a clarification, which it quotes: "Compared to today, this works out to a 17% reduction in weekly limits on Claude Code." It also quotes Anthropic as saying it was working on changes meant to give users more visibility and control of their usage, and that more Claude Code usage changes were coming. The report gives no date for those further changes.

Two more facts from the report. The temporary increase remained available through 13 September 2026, with the new permanent limits taking effect on 14 September 2026. And Anthropic stated that Claude usage varies with conversation length, model choice, tool usage and effort level, so the weekly allowance does not translate into a fixed number of Claude Code prompts.

What the report does not say, and this post therefore does not say: the size of any weekly allowance in tokens, dollars or prompts, before or after the change; whether the session window changed; and anything about plans the report does not name.

What Anthropic's own pages record

Anthropic publishes limit changes in two places. Its release notes page on support.claude.com lists product changes by date, and its support articles state the rules in force on the day you read them, with no dated list of what changed. The release notes page, read on 4 October 2026, was searched for the words limit, usage, Claude Code, credits and extra usage. No entry describes the weekly limit change of 14 September 2026.

That is why the change is recorded on a dated log of changes to Claude Code usage limits with its source named beside it. The same log holds the entries the release notes do carry: Premium seats and extra usage for Team and Enterprise plans on 20 August 2025, Claude Code on every Team Standard seat on 16 January 2026, and self-serve Enterprise plans with one seat type on 12 February 2026. A team that wants to know whether its allowance changed in a given month needs a dated record, because the support articles show only the current rule.

BleepingComputer's headline calls the September change a cut, and its first paragraph calls it a permanent increase, and each measures against a different baseline. When you describe the change to a colleague, say which baseline you mean.

How to read your own /usage

The log tells you what changed. Your own account tells you where you stand, and the command for that is /usage, typed inside Claude Code.

On a Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise plan, Anthropic's cost documentation, read on 4 October 2026, says subscribers see "plan usage bars, activity stats, and a usage breakdown" on that screen. The plan bars are the ones to read. They show the five-hour window and the weekly window, with the time each resets. Anthropic's error reference says usage counts against both windows at the same time, and that a single burst of heavy activity "can exhaust the weekly allowance before the session window resets". The weekly window gives its capacity back on one fixed day each week, so we recommend planning around the weekly bar. The page on the five-hour window and the weekly window explains both windows and every limit message.

Three details on the same screen, all from Anthropic's cost documentation:

  • The Session block shows API token usage and is "intended for API users", and its dollar figure has no bearing on a subscriber's billing. Read the bars, and treat the dollars as information for a pay-per-token account.
  • The breakdown under the bars shows what recent usage went to, with d or w to switch between the last 24 hours and the last 7 days. Anthropic says those figures are computed from local session history on this computer, so usage from other devices or from claude.ai is left out of the breakdown. The breakdown flags a behaviour such as long context or cache misses when it accounts for 10 percent or more of recent usage, with a tip beside the flag.
  • When the request for plan limits fails, most often because the usage endpoint is rate limited, /usage shows the last bars it loaded on this computer within the past 60 minutes, with a note reading Showing last-known usage and the age of that data. Press r to retry.

Outside the terminal, Settings > Usage on claude.ai shows the next weekly reset time, by the Pro and Max plan articles. The page on what counts against a Claude Code usage limit lists the activities that draw on the allowance, and how to read /usage and /context covers every row of the screen.

Why we keep the log

Reveneau is an AI software development consultancy whose code is written by AI, so a change to a usage limit changes the running cost of every Reveneau build. Reveneau is independent of Anthropic. The guide to Claude Code usage limits dates every fact and names its source, and its dated log is updated when the release notes, the support articles it cites, or a named report record a new change. Between updates, Anthropic's own pages may be newer.

A limit change is a comparison between two days. Name both days, and read your own bars.

Common questions

What changed in Claude Code weekly limits on 14 September 2026?

By BleepingComputer's report of 29 August 2026, read on 4 October 2026, a temporary 50 percent increase in Claude Code weekly limits ended after 13 September 2026, and from 14 September 2026 a permanent 25 percent increase over the pre-promotion baseline applies to Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans. The report quotes Anthropic as writing that compared to that day the change works out to a 17 percent reduction in weekly limits on Claude Code.

Was the September 2026 change a rise or a cut in Claude Code weekly limits?

Both, depending on the baseline, and BleepingComputer's report of 29 August 2026 states each. Against the level before the temporary promotion, the permanent level from 14 September 2026 is 25 percent higher. Against the temporary level in place until 13 September 2026, it is 17 percent lower, by the report's figure. The report's illustration is 100 before, 150 during the promotion, and 125 after. When you describe the change, say which baseline you mean.

Does Anthropic's release notes page record the 14 September 2026 change?

No. Anthropic's release notes page on support.claude.com, read on 4 October 2026, was searched for the words limit, usage, Claude Code, credits and extra usage, and no entry describes the weekly limit change of 14 September 2026. The entry in Reveneau's dated log therefore rests on BleepingComputer's report of 29 August 2026, which quotes Anthropic's own posts, and the log says so beside the entry.

Which plans did the 14 September 2026 change apply to?

BleepingComputer's report of 29 August 2026, read on 4 October 2026, quotes Anthropic as naming Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise plans. A seat is one member's place on a Team or Enterprise plan, and a seat-based Enterprise plan is one billed per seat. The report names no other plan, and it gives no figure for the size of any weekly allowance in tokens, dollars or prompts, before or after the change.

How many Claude Code prompts does a weekly allowance give?

No fixed number, by Anthropic's own account. BleepingComputer's report of 29 August 2026 quotes Anthropic as stating that Claude usage varies with conversation length, model choice, tool usage and effort level, so the weekly allowance does not translate into a fixed number of prompts. Anthropic's pricing page, read on 4 October 2026, states each plan's allowance only as a multiple of another plan's, with no token count attached.

What are the two windows of a Claude Code usage limit?

A session window and a weekly window. Anthropic's Pro and Max plan support articles, read on 4 October 2026, say the session-based usage limit resets every five hours, and that weekly limits reset at a fixed time each week assigned to your account, which stays the same whichever day you start. Anthropic's error reference says usage counts against both at the same time, so one heavy task can empty the weekly window while the session window still has hours left.

How do I read the plan bars in /usage?

Run /usage inside Claude Code. On a Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise plan, Anthropic's cost documentation, read on 4 October 2026, says subscribers see plan usage bars, activity stats and a usage breakdown. The bars show the five-hour and the weekly window with the time each resets. The breakdown under them shows what recent usage went to, with d or w to switch between the last 24 hours and the last 7 days, computed from this computer's local session history only.

Why does the Session block in /usage show a dollar figure on a subscription?

Because that block is for pay-per-token users. Anthropic's cost documentation, read on 4 October 2026, says the Session block shows API token usage and is intended for API users, and that the dollar figure is computed locally from token counts at list price and has no bearing on a subscriber's billing. A subscriber reads the plan bars above it. The breakdown flags a behaviour such as long context when it accounts for 10 percent or more of recent usage.

What does /usage show when it cannot load my plan limits?

By Anthropic's cost documentation, read on 4 October 2026, when the request for plan limits fails, most often because the usage endpoint is rate limited, /usage shows the last bars it loaded on this computer within the past 60 minutes, with a note reading Showing last-known usage and the age of that data, and r retries. Without a snapshot from the past 60 minutes it reports that the endpoint is rate limited and offers the same retry. Settings > Usage on claude.ai shows the next weekly reset.
